Shaye Moskowitz, MD, PhD, Leads Cerebrovascular and Neuroendovascular Surgery Program
Officials at Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Marcus Neuroscience Institute
today announced the hiring of cerebrovascular specialist Shaye Moskowitz,
MD, PhD. Dr. Moskowitz will join the organization on September 15 and
serve as Director of Cerebrovascular and Neuroendovascular Surgery. In
that capacity, he will spearhead the Institute’s treatment of aneurysms
and vascular disorders of the brain.
“We are extremely fortunate to have a clinician and researcher the
caliber of Dr. Moskowitz join our team,” said Robert Levy, MD, PhD,
Director of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute. “He brings impeccable
credentials and a skill set that will be invaluable to the patients we
serve.”
One of Dr. Moskowitz’s primary areas of focus is in endovascular
“coiling,” a procedure used to block blood flow into a cerebral
aneurysm, which helps prevent it from rupturing. Coiling is also used
as an intervention for aneurysms that have already bled.
Coiling is a minimally invasive procedure that involves placing a catheter
in an artery in the groin and then carefully threading it up to the aneurysm
in the brain using intraoperative guided imagery. The coil is then placed
in the aneurysm to stop blood flow.
A graduate of Yeshiva University in New York, Dr. Moskowitz earned both
his medical and doctoral degrees from SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn.
He completed his internship, residency and an endovascular fellowship
at the Cleveland Clinic. He then served on staff within the Clinic’s
Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology and acted as the head of neuroendovascular
surgery at its Cerebrovascular Center.
An accomplished researcher, Dr. Moskowitz has published in such prestigious
peer-reviewed publications as
Neurosurgery, Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases and the
Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery.
“I look forward with great anticipation and enthusiasm to joining
the Marcus Neuroscience Institute,” said Dr. Moskowitz. “Along
with my colleagues, I believe we have an opportunity to dramatically change
the landscape of care in the neurosciences for patients in South Florida
and beyond.”
Created out of a lead $25 million grant from the Marcus Foundation, which
was initiated by Bernie Marcus, former CEO of The Home Depot, and his
wife Billi, the Marcus Neuroscience Institute is a new, $52 million, 56,000-square-foot
facility that houses a 22-bed Neuro Intensive Care and Step-Down unit
and four operating rooms equipped with intraoperative MRI and CT scanners.
Only a handful of programs across the country offer this operating room
technology. Each patient room in the Institute is private with special
monitoring capabilities that provide vital information on both the patient’s
neurological and cardiovascular functions.
