The Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton Regional
Hospital continues to offer state-of-the-art treatment options for its
patients with Esteya®, a high dose rate electronic skin surface brachytherapy
system. This device provides skin cancer patients with basal cell and
squamous cell carcinoma a non-invasive option that results in more precise
radiation delivery with minimal downtime.
Brachytherapy is a type of treatment that brings a radiation source close
to the cancer site. Traditional high-dose rate brachytherapy has been
used for many years at the Lynn Cancer Institute, demonstrating excellent
results and establishing effective protocols for treating patients. Esteya,
a new and improved electronic skin surface brachytherapy device, delivers
a low-energy X-ray that results in less damage to surrounding tissue,
fewer side effects and a faster recovery so it is ideal for patients with
cancer in cosmetically sensitive areas, such as the face and hands. In
addition, the low-energy X-ray also requires less shielding so treatment
areas are not limited as they are with traditional brachytherapy.

to more patients,” says Michael Kasper, MD, a radiation oncologist
at the Lynn Cancer Institute. “While the efficiency and improved
workflow of Esteya will make our lives as clinicians easier, accessibility
for the patient is the primary advantage of the system. The compact design
and reduced shielding requirements of Esteya will enable us to easily
move it throughout the clinic to better serve our patients. In general,
electronic brachytherapy also offers shorter treatment times and more
effective dosing.”
Collectively, basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma are the most prevalent
cancers in the United States and are of particular concern for Floridians
due to our climate and outdoor lifestyle. Sun exposed areas of the skin
are most affected, but skin cancers can occur on any area of the skin.
The Lynn Cancer Institute treats over 150 skin cancer cases annually,
and will be the first facility in Florida, and one of only a few nationwide,
to offer Esteya.
