Collaborative approach to set new regional standard of care for patients
Boca Raton Regional Hospital announces the establishment of a Center for
Colo-Rectal Surgery. The Hospital’s new center will specialize in
providing an integrated approach to the surgical treatment of colo-rectal
diseases, with a focus on collaboration among specialized physicians from
Boca Regional and throughout the region.
The Hospital is already a recognized leader in colo-rectal care, earning
the 2014 Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award™ by Healthgrades®
for the 10th year in a row. Moreover, Boca Regional doctors have performed
more than 3,500 colo-rectal surgeries — the most in Palm Beach County
— with 80 percent of all procedures performed robotically or laparoscopically,
far surpassing the national average of 20 to 25 percent.
The new Center for Colo-Rectal Surgery will focus on surgical intervention
for a variety of conditions, including colo-rectal cancer, inflammatory
bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), diverticulitis
and anorectal disease (hemorrhoids and fistulas), highlighted by a minimally
invasive hemorrhoid treatment that is virtually painless with no recovery time.
When treating colo-rectal cancer patients, the center will employ a multimodality
approach, in which an entire medical team assembles at one time and in
one location to create a strategic, personalized treatment plan for the
patient. Multimodality clinics are a cornerstone component of treatment
at Boca Regional’s Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute.
Andrew Ross, MD, a regional leader in colo-rectal surgery, will serve
as the center’s Director. Dr. Ross performed the region’s
first single-incision laparoscopic colectomy at Boca Regional, removing
a patient’s colon cancer through a 3/4-inch incision. In a traditional
laparoscopic colectomy, doctors remove part of the patient’s colon
through four incisions in the abdomen. The single-incision procedure means
a faster recovery with less scarring and less time in the hospital.
Joining Dr. Ross in comprising the Center for Colo-Rectal Surgery’s
clinical leadership team are three fellowship-trained colo-rectal surgeons
from Boca Regional: Avraham Belizon, MD, who will serve as Co-Director
of the center; James Barron, MD; and Jose Yeguez, MD.
