Smallest Implantable Cardiac Monitoring Device Available
Boca Raton Regional Hospital today announced that it is using the Medtronic
Reveal LINQ™ Insertable Cardiac Monitoring (ICM) System, the smallest
implantable cardiac monitoring device available for patients.
The Reveal LINQ ICM is approximately one-third the size of a triple-A
battery, making it more than 80 percent smaller than other ICMs. Despite
its size, the device is part of a robust system that allows physicians
to continuously and wirelessly monitor a patient’s heart for up
to three years. The device also provides 20 percent more memory than its
larger predecessor. “In addition to its decreased size and increased
capacity, the Reveal LINQ ICM is more simple and faster to implant,”
said E. Martin Kloosterman, MD, Chief of Cardiology at Boca Regional.
“That gives us the opportunity to expand access to more patients
needing long-term monitoring.”
Through a small incision less than one centimeter in size, the ICM is
placed in the upper left side of the chest and is nearly invisible to
the naked eye. The device is inserted using minimally invasive technique,
which provides material benefit to the patient through reduced procedure
time, less blood loss and faster recovery.
The Reveal LINQ ICM is also MR-Conditional, allowing patients to undergo
magnetic resonance imaging if ever needed.
Another significant advantage is that the ICM is part of a system that
utilizes the MyCare Link™ Patient Monitor, which is a simplified,
remote monitoring system with global cellular technology that transmits
a patient’s cardiac device diagnostic data to their clinicians from
nearly any location in the world. Boca Regional was the first hospital
in Florida to employ this technology when it was introduced in October 2013.
“This system allows us to provide truly cutting-edge capabilities
in the care of patients with or at risk for cardiac arrhythmias, fainting
spells or stroke of unknown origin,” said Dr. Kloosterman, who has
implanted more of the devices than any other electrophysiologist in Palm
Beach County. “They are game-changing advances for those in need
of cardiac monitoring.”
