Marcus Neuroscience Institute's Clinical Leadership Team Adds Two Renowned Specialists

Officials at Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Marcus Neuroscience Institute today announced the addition of two physicians to the Institute’s clinical leadership team: Patricio S. Espinosa, MD, MS, and Nicholas B. Levine, MD. The doctors will begin practicing at the Institute in January.

“I am pleased to welcome Dr. Espinosa and Dr. Levine to our clinical team, and even more so privileged to work alongside them,” said Robert M. Levy, MD, PhD, Director of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute. “Both arrive with the extensive knowledge, training and expertise necessary to provide our patients with the most sophisticated level of neurologic care.”

Dr. Espinosa will serve as the Director of General Adult Neurology at the Institute. In addition to adult neurology, Dr. Espinosa specializes in epilepsy and sleep disorders. He earned his bachelor’s from Colegio El Sauce in Ecuador, his master’s from Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from the Universidad Central del Ecuador. He completed a fellowship in epilepsy and sleep disorders at Harvard Medical School, as well as residencies in internal medicine and neurology at the University of Kentucky, where he served as Chief Neurology Resident. Dr. Espinosa is the co-author of the textbook Focus on Neuroimaging: Neurology Self- Assessment and has authored chapters in several neurology textbooks. He has presented work at both national and international medical conferences, and his research has appeared in such noted peer-reviewed publications as Neurology, Pediatric Neurology and Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Dr. Levine has been named the Institute’s Director of Skull Base Surgery, the complex sub-specialty of removing lesions located on the floor of the cranium. He earned his bachelor’s from the University of California, Los Angeles and his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed a residency in neurosurgery and a cerebrovascular surgery fellowship at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine, as well as a skull base/cerebrovascular fellowship at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Dr. Levine most recently served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the distinguished University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and Director of their Microsurgical Laboratory. He is an experienced researcher whose work has been published in a variety of top peer-reviewed publications, such as Neurosurgery, Journal of Neuro-oncology and Clinical Cancer Research.

The Marcus Neuroscience Institute was created out of a lead $25 million grant from the Marcus Foundation and initiated by Billi and Bernie Marcus, former CEO of The Home Depot. The facility houses a 20-bed Neuro Intensive Care and Step-Down Unit and four dedicated operating rooms — including one equipped with intraoperative MRI and two with intraoperative CT capabilities. Each patient room is private and has special monitoring technology that provides vital information on both a patient’s neurological and cardiovascular functions. Rooms also feature an abundance of natural lighting and an antechamber where family members can stay during the patient’s hospitalization, as both of these factors have been shown to positively influence recovery in neurological conditions.
